Allentown’s Climate Initiatives: Building a Sustainable Future

Allentown’s Climate Initiatives: Building a Sustainable Future

Allentown is taking significant steps toward environmental sustainability by developing its inaugural Climate Action Plan. This initiative aims to create a healthier, more resilient, and equitable future for the city.

Community Engagement

Central to this effort is the citywide Sustainability Survey, inviting residents, workers, and students to share their insights on sustainable practices. The feedback will guide the Climate Action Plan, ensuring it reflects the community’s priorities and needs. The survey is brief, anonymous, and takes less than 10 minutes to complete. Participate in the survey here.

Urban Forestry and Green Spaces

In 2024, Allentown secured over $1 million in grants to enhance its urban tree canopy, particularly in historically underserved neighborhoods. This funding supports a comprehensive inventory of street trees, the development of an Urban Forestry Master Plan, and the planting of 600 street trees by May 2028. These efforts aim to improve air quality, provide shade, and beautify the city. Learn more about the Parks Sustainability initiatives.

Youth Involvement

Recognizing the importance of engaging younger generations, Allentown launched the Youth Climate Action Fund in 2024 with support from Bloomberg Philanthropies. This program empowers youth aged 15–24 to design and implement climate action projects. To date, 15 youth-led initiatives have received grants of up to $5,000, focusing on education, environmental stewardship, public art, sustainability, and advocacy. Discover the awarded projects.

Addressing Environmental Challenges

Allentown faces environmental challenges, including air quality concerns. The B. Braun Medical Inc. facility, which uses ethylene oxide for sterilization, has been under scrutiny due to potential health risks. In March 2024, the EPA announced amendments to reduce ethylene oxide emissions by 90%, aiming to lower cancer risks for nearby residents. The city is collaborating with state and federal agencies to monitor and mitigate these emissions. Read more about the EPA’s actions.

Climate Change Impacts

Climate projections indicate that Allentown will experience increased risks from extreme precipitation and heat. By 2050, the city is expected to see a rise in days with temperatures exceeding 92°F and more intense rainfall events. These changes could lead to health issues, infrastructure strain, and environmental challenges. The Climate Action Plan will address these risks by implementing strategies to enhance the city’s resilience. Explore detailed climate risk assessments.

Allentown’s proactive approach to sustainability, community engagement, and environmental stewardship positions the city as a leader in addressing climate change and fostering a sustainable future for all residents.
