Allentown is taking significant steps toward environmental sustainability by involving the community in various climate initiatives. These efforts aim to create a healthier and more resilient city for all residents.
Community Engagement in Climate Action
In April 2025, during Earth Month, Allentown launched its first-ever Climate Action Plan. To ensure this plan reflects the community’s needs, the city conducted a Sustainability Survey, inviting input from residents, workers, and students. This survey assessed the community’s knowledge and interest in sustainable practices, guiding future environmental initiatives and setting long-term climate goals. Learn more about the survey.
Youth Involvement in Climate Solutions
Recognizing the importance of youth participation, Allentown received funding from Bloomberg Philanthropies to establish the Youth Climate Action Fund. This program empowers young people aged 15 to 24 to design and implement climate action projects. In its second round, 15 new youth-led projects were awarded grants of up to $5,000 each, fostering innovative solutions and active engagement among the city’s youth. Conservation Efforts and Greenway Development
Allentown is also focusing on conserving natural resources and enhancing green spaces. The Lehigh Valley Greenways Conservation Landscape aims to connect communities with greenways and trails, promoting outdoor recreation and environmental stewardship. This initiative seeks to protect watersheds, conserve critical landscapes, and support community revitalization through green infrastructure. Read more about Lehigh Valley Greenways.
Additionally, the city has secured over $1 million in grant funding to expand the urban tree canopy in historically underserved communities. These efforts not only beautify neighborhoods but also improve air quality and provide shade, contributing to the overall well-being of residents. Addressing Climate Change Risks
Allentown faces challenges related to climate change, including increased risks from extreme precipitation and heat. Projections indicate a rise in the number of days with temperatures exceeding 92°F, from about 7 days in 1990 to an estimated 36 days by 2050. The city is proactively addressing these risks through its Climate Action Plan and community engagement efforts. Explore Allentown’s climate change risks.
Through these comprehensive initiatives, Allentown is demonstrating a strong commitment to environmental sustainability and community involvement, paving the way for a greener and more resilient future.
