Allentown is taking significant steps toward environmental sustainability by developing its first-ever Climate Action Plan. This initiative aims to create a healthier, more resilient, and equitable future for the city.
Community Engagement
In April 2025, during Earth Month, the city launched a Sustainability Survey to gather input from residents, workers, and students. This brief, anonymous survey assesses the community’s knowledge of and interest in sustainable practices, guiding future environmental initiatives and setting long-term climate goals that reflect the needs and priorities of Allentown.
Urban Forestry Initiatives
Since 2024, Allentown has received over $1 million in grant funding to expand and support the urban tree canopy in historically underserved communities. The city plans to plant 600 street trees and develop an Urban Forestry Master Plan to enhance the health and wellness of urban forests and ecosystems.
Youth Involvement
The Youth Climate Action Fund, initiated in April 2024 with support from Bloomberg Philanthropies, empowers young people aged 15–24 to design and implement climate action projects. In January 2025, the city received an additional $100,000 to support more youth-led initiatives, fostering a new generation of environmental stewards.
Addressing Climate Risks
Allentown faces significant climate change risks, including increased precipitation and heat. Projections indicate a rise in extreme heat days and more intense rainfall events, leading to potential flooding and health impacts. The Climate Action Plan will address these challenges by developing strategies to mitigate risks and enhance the city’s resilience.
How to Get Involved
Residents are encouraged to participate in the Sustainability Survey and stay informed about upcoming community meetings and events related to the Climate Action Plan. Engaging with these initiatives allows community members to contribute to shaping a sustainable future for Allentown.
By collaborating on the Climate Action Plan, Allentown is demonstrating a commitment to environmental stewardship and community resilience, ensuring a thriving city for generations to come.
