Allentown’s Climate Action: A Community Effort Towards Sustainability

Allentown’s Climate Action: A Community Effort Towards Sustainability

Allentown is taking significant steps toward environmental sustainability by developing its inaugural Climate Action Plan. This initiative aims to create a healthier, more resilient, and equitable future for the city.

Community Engagement in Action

In April 2025, during Earth Month, the city launched a Sustainability Survey to gather input from residents, workers, and students. This brief, anonymous survey assesses the community’s knowledge of and interest in sustainable practices, guiding future environmental initiatives and setting long-term climate goals that reflect the needs and priorities of Allentown.

Empowering Youth for Climate Solutions

Recognizing the vital role of young people in addressing climate change, Allentown established the Youth Climate Action Fund. Initially funded with $50,000 from Bloomberg Philanthropies in April 2024, the program received an additional $100,000 in January 2025. This fund supports youth and youth-serving groups in designing and implementing climate action projects, activating individuals aged 15 to 24 to co-design, co-produce, and co-govern urgent climate solutions.

Urban Forestry and Green Initiatives

Allentown’s commitment to sustainability extends to its urban landscape. In 2024, the city received $920,800 to advance the health and wellness of its urban forests and ecosystems. This funding supports a comprehensive inventory of the city’s street trees, the development of an Urban Forestry Master Plan, and the planting of 600 street trees in historically underinvested communities. These efforts aim to enhance the urban tree canopy, mitigate exposure to pollution, and improve the overall quality of life for all residents.

Understanding Climate Risks

Allentown faces significant climate change risks, particularly concerning precipitation and heat. Projections indicate an increase in extreme rainfall events and a rise in the number of days with temperatures exceeding 92°F. These changes pose challenges such as flooding, heat-related illnesses, and impacts on infrastructure. The city’s proactive approach in developing a Climate Action Plan is crucial in addressing these risks and building resilience.

How You Can Get Involved

Residents are encouraged to participate in the ongoing development of the Climate Action Plan by sharing their experiences and ideas. Engaging in community cleanups, supporting local green initiatives, and staying informed about sustainability efforts are valuable ways to contribute to Allentown’s environmental goals.

By working together, Allentown can navigate the challenges posed by climate change and create a sustainable, thriving community for generations to come.
